NCAA Division I Eligibility Requirements
Division I has the strictest academic entry bar in college sports — and since August 2023 it's entirely GPA-based. Here's the full picture: the 2.3 line, the 16 core courses, the 10/7 rule, and what happens in the redshirt band.
- →2.3 core-course GPA → full qualifier: practice, compete, and receive athletic aid from day one.
- →2.0–2.29 → academic redshirt: enroll, practice, and receive aid, but no competition in year one.
- →Below 2.0 → not certified; a recovery plan through your remaining semesters is the path back.
- →16 NCAA-approved core courses required — only your best 16 count toward the GPA.
- →The 10/7 rule: 10 core courses done before senior year, 7 of them in English, math, or science — and those 10 grades are locked once senior year starts.
- →No NCAA SAT/ACT requirement. Core courses and core GPA still determine academic eligibility.

Can I fix a low GPA senior year?
Partially. Because 10 core courses lock before senior year (the 10/7 rule), senior-year grades can only move the remaining 6 slots of your best-16. That's why sophomore and junior year are the real leverage window.
Does a redshirt year cost me eligibility?
An academic redshirt keeps all four seasons of competition — you just can't use one in year one. You practice, train, and receive aid while establishing academic standing.
Do weighted honors/AP grades help?
No — the NCAA core GPA is unweighted. An A is 4.0 whether the course is regular or AP.
