NCAA Eligibility for Texas Athletes

Every Texas student-athlete runs on two clocks. The University Interscholastic League (UIL) decides whether you play this season. The NCAA decides whether you play in college — and its clock starts the first day of 9th grade.

Clock 1 — this season

UIL eligibility

Texas runs "No Pass, No Play": a grade below 70 in any class at the grading-period check suspends eligibility for at least 15 school days (with regain checks).

Passing your state's bar keeps you on the field now — but it says nothing about the NCAA line.

Clock 2 — college

NCAA eligibility (GPA-only)

  • D1: 2.3 core GPA (full qualifier) · 2.0–2.29 academic redshirt
  • D2: 2.2 core GPA (full qualifier)
  • D3: no national floor — school admissions standards
  • NAIA: 2.3 automatic · 2-of-3 criteria below

Texas athlete questions

What GPA does a Texas athlete need to play NCAA sports?

The same national standard as everywhere: a 2.3 core-course GPA for Division I full qualification and 2.2 for Division II, calculated from your best 16 NCAA-approved core courses. Since August 2023 there is no SAT/ACT requirement — eligibility is GPA-only.

Is UIL eligibility the same as NCAA eligibility?

No — and this is the mistake that costs athletes. UIL rules decide whether you can play for your high school this season. NCAA rules decide whether you can compete in college. You can be fully eligible under UIL and still miss the NCAA line, because the NCAA counts only approved core courses on a 4-year clock that starts the first day of 9th grade.

Do Texas athletes still need SAT or ACT scores for the NCAA?

No. The NCAA permanently retired the SAT/ACT sliding scale for students enrolling after August 1, 2023. Test scores can still matter for admissions and scholarships at specific colleges — just not for NCAA initial eligibility.

When should a Texas athlete register with the NCAA Eligibility Center?

Registering by the start of junior year is the common guidance, but the GPA that decides everything is built from 9th grade on. Tracking your core GPA from freshman year is what keeps the junior-year registration a formality instead of a scramble.
