NCAA Eligibility for Delaware Athletes
Every Delaware student-athlete runs on two clocks. The Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) decides whether you play this season. The NCAA decides whether you play in college — and its clock starts the first day of 9th grade.
DIAA eligibility
DIAA academic standards govern week-to-week and semester eligibility for high school competition in Delaware. The specific GPA and course-load bar can vary by district — your athletic director or counselor has the current handbook.
Passing your state's bar keeps you on the field now — but it says nothing about the NCAA line.
NCAA eligibility (core courses + core GPA)
- D1: 2.3 core GPA (full qualifier) · 2.0–2.29 academic redshirt
- D2: 2.2 core GPA (full qualifier)
- D3: no national floor — school admissions standards
- NAIA: 2.3 automatic · or 2 of 3 criteria
Calculated from your best 16 approved core courses. No NCAA SAT/ACT requirement. Core courses and core GPA still determine academic eligibility.

Delaware athlete questions
What GPA does a Delaware athlete need to play NCAA sports?
The same national standard as everywhere: a 2.3 core-course GPA for Division I full qualification and 2.2 for Division II, calculated from your best 16 NCAA-approved core courses. No NCAA SAT/ACT requirement. Core courses and core GPA still determine academic eligibility.
Is DIAA eligibility the same as NCAA eligibility?
No — and this is the mistake that costs athletes. DIAA rules decide whether you can play for your high school this season. NCAA rules decide whether you can compete in college. You can be fully eligible under DIAA and still miss the NCAA line, because the NCAA counts only approved core courses on a 4-year clock that starts the first day of 9th grade.
Do Delaware athletes still need SAT or ACT scores for the NCAA?
No. NCAA Division I and II initial eligibility no longer uses an SAT/ACT sliding scale. Academic certification is based on required NCAA-approved core courses, core-course GPA, applicable timing rules, graduation, and Eligibility Center review. Test scores can still matter for admissions and scholarships at specific colleges — just not for NCAA initial eligibility.
When should a Delaware athlete register with the NCAA Eligibility Center?
Registering by the start of junior year is the common guidance, but the GPA that decides everything is built from 9th grade on. Tracking your core GPA from freshman year is what keeps the junior-year registration a formality instead of a scramble.
